About Tom Regis

Music, of course, is about something beyond the theoretical, yet understanding the fundamentals of music can provide a powerful and effective toolkit for moving into the ineffable. It is this attachment to the indefinable worlds that can best drive the harmonic search.

Tom Regis

Tom Regis is a lifelong artist whose journeys through the world of music and life experience have led him to the written word. Born on the North Shore of Boston, Massachusetts, Tom’s creative roots began with classical piano and an immersion in the exciting world of classic rock, and ultimately blossomed into a global career spanning Latin, jazz, R&B, and fusion, as well as writing for television and film. After decades of performing, composing, and collaborating with music legends around the world, Tom now seeks to impart his knowledge, understanding and inspirations, channeling his experience and musical wisdom into his first book Western Harmony Simplified.

Tom now lives in South Florida, where he continues to compose and perform music with his own groups, direct music programs for underserved youth, and sit quietly at his desk, kukicha tea in hand, forming ideas into words.

Behind the Sound

Tom Regis’s music theory book From Beethoven to Bill Evans: Western Harmony Simplified isn’t just a book—it’s an invitation to explore the surprisingly compact and straightforward architecture of Western music through the eyes of a lifelong composer, performer, and thinker.

In this groundbreaking guide, Tom Regis takes you beyond music notes and chords into the structural essence of harmony. What harmonic commonalities underlie the formative history of classical music, the history of jazz, the history of rock, and the history of popular music and blues?

With a rare blend of clarity and depth, Regis reveals how harmonic principles aren’t just rules to follow – they provide a blueprint that once understood reveals a simple design that will liberate a musician, allowing entry into the transcendent world of storytelling with sound, a world that goes far beyond mere music analysis, piano lessons, and rote music education. This is a jazz (and classical) harmony book for beginners to experts alike, a must have music theory book from author Tom Regis.
